Fragrance lamps, also known as effusion lamps or catalytic diffuser lamps, were originally invented in France in the 1800's to purify the air in hospitals. The fragrance lamp system consists of a decorative vessel, a braided wick connected to a ceramic stone, a vented cap, a snuffer cap, and a special scented fuel. Once the ceramic stone is heated, a catalytic combustion process draws air into the vessel and releases ozone molecules that can kill airborne bacteria and neutralize odor particles.
